Drama - Merchant of Venice in Broadway Drama and Movie Version
In both version of Merchant of Venice, the first thing that I notice is the choices of costume. Since its setting is mentioned in the movie, which is in the mid of 16th century in Venice, but not mentioned in the Broadway drama, the choices of costume might refers to the setting. In the movie, the choices of costume is very much more old-fashioned than the Broadway version. For example, Shylock's costume in the Broadway version is more simple. It is like the Jews in America or England in the present time. However, in the movie, the outfit that is wore by Shylock is more "heavy", following the setting.
Beside the choices of costume, other difference is the stage. Both the movie and the drama are proscenium stage. In its Broadway drama, the stage is more simple and using less property. It also has blocking technique since it is "pure" proscenium stage. However, in the movie, we can see more extras, more scenery, and more point of view. I am agree with Resa that it is like "fake arena" in proscenium stage.
